Avalanche Courses
Improve your backcountry skiing, travel and avalanche skills by enrolling in one of our NZ Mountain Safety Council (MSC) avalanche courses.
Two Day Avalanche Awareness course
includes:
- Mountain Safety Council Avalanche Awareness course - 1 day and 1 evening lecture. You will learn about:
- Mountain weather
- Identification of avalanche terrain
- Basic route finding and decision making
- Companion rescue
- Safety equipment, inclusing use of transceivers
- 1 day off-piste ski clinic
- two 1.5 hour clinics with a highly-trained ski instructor
- gain confidence and technique to improve your skiing in backcountry terrain
- your improvements will translate into more fun in the backcountry powder and crud
Participants must provide their own snow shovel, probe and transceiver. These can be hired in Christchurch.
*You will need to be up at Broken River for an evening lecture on the night prior to the two full days of the course.
Cost: includes 2 nights DBB accommodation, 2 lift passes, ski instruction and MSC course fee.

This course will run as part of the first night and day of the Two Day Avalanche Awareness Course.

Four Day Backcountry Avalanche Course
This Mountain Safety Council courrse includes training on:
- characteristics of avalanche phenomenon
- Snowpack factors (layers and shear planes)
- Observation techniques
- Human factors
- Group travel in avalanche terrain
- Small group search and rescue
This four day course includes two evening lectures. Participants must have completed the Avalanche Awareness Course.
Please bring your own snow shovel, probe and transceiver or hire these in Christchurch.
Cost: includes 3 nights DBB accommodation, 4 lift passes and MSC course fee.
