Ridercross Results

The 2nd Annual BWMsnow Ridercross was held at Broken River on the 30th of August 2008. The exiting course was carved out of the main basin and featured a tabletop, a gap jump and the now infamous finishing pond. The competitors did not disappoint and put on a show for all the spectators gathered around the snow bar outside Palmer Lodge! We saw both boarders and skiers battle it out through several heats until an overall winner was decided in each category.

A big thank you needs to be given to Greg fromBWMsnow our title sponsor who donated all of the outstanding prizes including a brand new High Society Freeride snowboard. The event would not have happed without our hard working course designers Ivan and Isaac and all those keen shovelers…thanks boys and girls.

Competitor or spectator…it was a successful, thrilling and highly entertaining day! We look forward to doing all over again in ‘09!

Our Winners...Kate, Tess, Dan and Isaac.

Helpful Hints for coming to Broken River!!!

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

If you haven’t been to Broken River before, here are some tips to help make your first visit easier.

  • The 6km road into Broken River from the highway can be covered by snow and be slick. Be sure you have chains for your vehicle – this includes large 4WD vehicles - this season all vehicles have been fitting chains to get to the carpark. Put your chains on before you need to (even if you have a 4WD) – there are limited places on the road where you have room to safely fit chains.
  • Unlike some of the bigger fields, we don’t have signs on the road telling you where to put your chains on - please use common sense. 2WD vehicles are recommended to fit chains at the highway.
  • Our carpark is about a 20-30 minute walk from the access tow. We have a goods lift at the main carpark to take your gear most of the way.
  • Goods lift and Ticket Office hours are the following:
    • 8:30 am – 12:00 pm OPEN
    • 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm CLOSED
    • 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm OPEN
    • Upon arrival load your equipment, luggage and ski gear onto the goods lift, say HELLO and tell us when you have finished loading (we will hear you through the intercom). Walk up the road then up the walking track (about 20 mins to the ticket office).
  • Be aware that the road and foot track can be slippery. Wear appropriate footwear and bring your ski poles to assist you up the track (crampons are recommended but not necessary and are for sale in the ticket office).
  • If you can bring cash for your ticket, you will get your ticket and up to the field faster – we have some technical issues with our EFTPOS which slows things down.
  • EFTPOS is available and we also take Visa and Mastercard (sorry, no AMEX).
  • Tow Belts or harnesses and a nutcracker are required for our rope tows. There is no cost to hire a belt and nutcracker; however we ask that you sign them in and out at the ticket office.
  • If you own a climbing harness be sure to bring it along with a carabiner!! Limited numbers of nutcrackers on their own are available for hire/rent.
  • We strongly recommend the use of leather gloves or glove savers (a leather mitt that goes over your glove). We sell fleecy lined leather gloves for $35 and glove savers for $15 at the Ticket Office and the Palmer Lodge canteen.
  • If you have never ridden a nutcracker rope tow before, be patient and be ready to persevere with it. Let us know at the ticket office and we will arrange for somebody to help you at the access tow. Some people get it first time, others might take half a day to really get comfortable. Sorry, snowboarders, it is a little harder on a board than it is on skis, you have to balance and keep an edge going up the tow. Our Access/Rugby tow is on your right hand side (facing the rope for natural/regular foot boarders) and the Main and Ridge tows are on the left hand side (facing the rope for goofy foot boarders).
  • Daily group Ski/Snowboard lessons are included in a ski week (Monday – Friday) OR available upon request. We have VERY qualified instructors so you will benefit no matter what your ability level.
  • Palmer Lodge (our day lodge) is situated on the field, half way up the Rugby/Access Tow. It has a large, comfortable lounge/dining area and a full kitchen available for use if you want to cook up some lunch. The canteen sells gourmet pies, noodles, soup, drinks, cookies and chips as well as Broken River clothing, souvenirs and essentials such as glove savers, gloves, harnesses, and nutcrackers. We suggest you take your day packs and lunch to Palmer Lodge for the day.
  • We have limited telecommunications available at Broken River. There is no cellphone coverage, and no publicly available internet. If you wish to make a call from BR we suggest you bring a phonecard / calling card such as a Telecom Calling Card or one of the various prepay cards.

9th-10th August

What a season we’re having! The snow is just superb and there’s no better way to enjoy all the powder we’re having than on your tele boards!

A reminder of the R & R Sport Free Heel Fun Weekend at Broken River Ski Club on August 9-10th - just 10 days away!.

A great get-together to free the heel, free the mind, and tell tall tele tales with fellow tele markers.

Plan of attack:
Tele Demo gear from R & R Sport available to try all weekend

  • Saturday - Fun events for all abilities with prizes and spot prizes to be won. Registration between 10 and 11 am in Palmer Lodge.
  • Saturday evening - social time in the lodges, swap a few tall tales
  • Sunday - Coaching clinics may be less formal than previously as Sam and Rory are unavailable this year. 2 hour morning instruction, 2 hour free riding afternoon with instructor - a great way to improve your skiing.

All of the accommodation on the mountain is now full for the weekend.

Spread the word to all your tele friends and hope to see you there. It will be a great weekend!

cheers
