Our thoughts go out to all our Christchurch friends and Broken River members who were affected by yesterdays Christchurch earthquake. We hope you and your families are safe and well, and have not suffered too much more damage. What a tumultuous time we live in. Here's hoping for calmer times ahead.

Opening July 2nd, 2011

Improvements to the Ticket Office

The summer work parties have been in full swing over the last few months and the main focus has been on improving the area outside the Ticket Office. A team of members have spent many weekends working away completing this project.

The Ticket Office is now under a large roof which covers the area between the Tramway and the ticket office window. So now you'll be sheltered from the falling snow when you purchase your ticket on a powder day. The flooring has also been replaced so everything is looking spic and span.

MSC Avalanche Courses

Improve your backcountry skiing, travel and avalanche skills by enrolling in one of our NZ Mountain Safety Council (MSC) avalanche courses. We are offering two courses that will run several times through the season. This is also a great chance to brush up on your backcountry skiing skills. The better you ski, the more fun you will have in that untracked powder! A one-day off-piste ski clinic is offered as part of the Two Day Avalanche Awareness Course and can also be taken in conjunction with the Four Day Backcountry Avalanche Course.

2011 Opening Postponed

We are postponing our opening weekend. Tuesday's snow fall was good but not quite enough. We will update this website with more details on our rescheduled opening day soon. In the meantime let's hope the Snow Gods are kind to us.

It's Snowing!

FANTASTIC news! It's currently snowing. We've had between 15 and 20 cm of snow today and there is more to come. Thanks everyone for your snow dancing - please keep it up! We'll update the website with details of our opening date once we have assessed conditions up on the field. Not to sound greedy, but here's hoping for lots more snow.

30 cm of snow

Yesterdays strong storm brought us 30 cm of new snow. Awesome - so we're one major step closer to opening.

It'll take a bit more to fill in around all the big snow tussocks but then we will be in business.

Yesterday was a wild, windy day and it continued on through the night, but who would have guessed that this morning when we woke to a still, stunning bluebird day.

Opening Sat July 16th

What an EPIC start to the season! 1.5 metres (yes metres) of new snow in the last 6 days. The snow gods have been kind to us. We will be opening this coming Saturday July 16th, weather permitting. So come on up!

Please ensure you fit chains at the beginning of the Broken River road. Note that the Tyndall Tramway will only be carrying gear this weekend. We apologise for this. Make sure you wear good boots for the walk up the foot track - it'll be a good 15 to 20 minute warm-up for your first weekend of riding.

Alas our webcam is currently not working. We have a technical issue that will be fixed as fast as we can.

We still have accommodation available for the next two weeks (July 17-30th) if you are looking for a great place to ski/board and stay.

New Snow

After more than 1.75 metres of snow in the last week the skies have finally cleared. What a start to the 2011 winter season. Incredible.

The staff are up now up on the field with the challenging task of digging out all the tows and undertaking snow control work. Ropes will have to be dug out and pulleys raised. Both are well buried under the snow - with drifts of more than 2.3 metres in places due to the strong westerly system we've been experiencing over the last week. Thanks guys for all your hard work. We very much appreciate it.

60 years since first skiing

Today marks 60 years since the first skiing in Broken River Basin by founding Broken River Ski Club members.

July 14th 1951 vividly recalled

Leith Newell, founding member and wife of founding President, the late Jack Newell, recalls the trip of July 14^th 1951 vividly.

“The group of 10, from Rangiora, came up in the usual chariot, Jack’s V.8 truck – four in the cab and the rest in the back under the canvas tilt. Geoff and one other came through from Christchurch in ‘Aussie’, his 1928 Austin 7. We set off for the Basin from the bush edge at the start of the current Broken River road. The workers shouldered grubbers, picks and shovels to work on the future road and the seven optimists, skis. We walked in about 15 centimetres of snow, following our new roughly formed track for a short distance and then a blazed trail up through the bush, over the ridge near ‘Jacks Pass’ and connected up with the rough track to Allan Willis’s small bush hut. We continued on up the valley to Allan’s Hut, skis battering from one tree to the next and the heavy-footed breaking though the crusted snow.”

“After lunch in Allan’s Hut the boys offered to clean up while the three girls – in the manner of the Egyptians, women and children first – headed up the mountain. We broke trail in breakable crust up to our knees, and following the bush edge reached the ridge, above the site of the present accommodation huts. A fairly exhausted group gathered here, fitted skins and made a high traverse into Broken River Basin at 4 p.m.!”

“It was pretty cold at that time of day, so after a very quick slide round we turned for home and had an exciting run back to the bushline. The experts in the group could do stem turns and were learning to ‘Christie’. The snow, although right down to the main highway, was sparse and tussocks poked through here and there. We had learned to ski on tussocks and daisies at the south end of Lake Lyndon so this hazard we merely ignored.”

“Then off with the skis and a bouncing trip down the hillside with giant strides and into the bush in the dark. None of us had torches so thankfully it was moonlight and head tracker Mehrtens was able to retrace our footsteps. It was a long, long climb up to the ridge to cross near ‘Jack’s Pass’ and a very tired party arrived back at ‘Watling Street’ near the beginning of the present Broken River road to find Hass and the group of prospective members huddled round a fire. He had them worried with tales of “side-hill” cougars and other prowling beasts of the mountains.”

No hi-tech gear in 1951

Contrast the hi-tech gear of 2011 with 60 years ago. The well-dressed adventurer of 1951 wore gabardine ski pants of generous cut, long woollen army puttes around the ankles to keep the snow out (“tiresome to put on” reflects Leith), woollen flannel shirt, a windproof jacket with elasticised waistband, and a peaked ski cap. Ski gear included N.Z. made O’Brien ski boots which were tramping boots with a square toe for the ski binding and a strap across the instep for support. “At least they were waterproof” says Leith Newell. Skis of the day were solid Hickory, Ash or Southland Beech fitted with ‘legbreaker’ downpull bindings. Plush climbing skins were an essential piece of equipment although one member of the group was known to use binder twine.

60 Years On

Sixty years on the ski clothes and gear may have changed markedly, but not the great friendships, passion for skiing and fun in the snow. At the 50^th celebrations, in 2001, founding President Jack Newell commented “Little did we know what we were beginning. We had no idea then that fifty years later our Ski Club would have made such progress – gear transported up the mountain by tram, huts with showers, flush toilets and electricity, and that our best skiers would race overseas in Olympics and World Cups - or that three generations would all be on the mountain together.”

Great Powder Conditions

The snow conditions are excellent right now and we have great coverage over the whole mountain. We've had an amazing start to the season thanks to the 1.75 metres of snow that fell last week.

In the main Broken River Basin we have lovely packed powder conditions on both the Main and Rugby Tows. The slopes on the Rugby Tow are silky smooth packed powder - glorious riding for everyone.

The learners areas have great groomed packed snow - ideal for the school holidays.

The powder snow in Allan's Basin is superb and don't worry there is plenty of untracked snow still to be found.

Take Part In Our Ski Rogaine

On Saturday 30th July we will host our annual Ski Rogaine event. This is a fun event that is like a treasure hunt on skis. Take part as a team, a family or on your own. It is a bit like orienteering on skis.

You will be given a map with controls to visit and you'll have an hour to visit as many of these as possible. Some controls are worth more points than others so you need to be strategic when you plot out your route. Make sure you are back at the alloted time as you quickly lose points for every minute that you are late.

It will be loads of fun for everyone.

Telemark Week

August 1-7 telemark skiers from around the South Island and across the Tasman will be gathering to "chew the fat" and touch up on their techniques - do come join us!

We have a great line-up of events.

August 1-5 Telemark Ski Week

We are running a special ski week for telemarkers. This will be a great opportunity for freeheelers to get together, get in some great turns and improve your telemark technique. If you've always wanted to learn to telemark this is YOUR week. We even have a limited amount of telemark gear available to hire - thanks R & R Sport.

We will have two guest telemark instructors vailable for lessons all week. Greg and Marti who are two of the best in the business - NZSIA Telemark Examiners from Arrowtown.

Lessons will be available (Monday to Thursday) and are included in the cost if you book a Sunday-to-Saturday 6 night/7 day package. For day visitors or people on other packages standard lessons rates apply. Find out more about our ski lesson rates here.

"Telemark" and "avalanche training" are the focus of the events coming up - after two very successful family weeks. Much fun was hard by all on the family weeks both on the slopes and in the lodges. Read more about this here.

Great Snow Conditions

We have excellent conditions this week with packed powder over the whole mountain. Skiing on Sunny Peak in the middle of the day has been fun. The shady faces of Happy Valley and the Rugby Tow have lovely sugary snow.

Conditions are firmer down on the Access Tow but you only need to ski or board that once per day.

The Telemark Week is progressing well with everyone making great improvements to their skiing. Don't forget the R & R Sport Freeheel Fun Weekend this coming weekend August 6th and 7th. If you'd like to give telemarking a go we do have some telemark gear available to use up at Palmer Lodge. We will also be offering lessons for all skill levels.

CHILL Jnr Freeride Comp

Next weekend (Aug 13-14th) we will host the CHILL Junior Big Mountain Freeride competition. This event is open to riders aged 10 to 16 years with divisions for girls, boys, skiers and snowboarders.

The competition is held over two days. Competitors have the chance to win something from the large pool of prizes as well as be invited to compete in the K2 Big Mountain CHILL Series.

Successful Broken River Telemark Week

Dry packed powder, blue skies and sheltered weather made for ideal conditions for the inaugural Broken River Telemark Week held August 1-5th.

We were incredibly fortunate to have two examiners from the Telemark Division of the New Zealand Ski Instructors Alliance (NZSIA) as guest instructors for the week. Everyone's skiing improved greatly as the week progressed.

Three of the participants completed and passed the Level One Telemark Instructors' Course - well done Claire, Tom and John.

The week finished on a high-note with the annual R & R Sport Freeheel Fun Weekend. Participants braved the foggy and wet conditions on Saturday morning for some fun events, including synchronised skiing and a human slalom. The weather improved in the afternoon in time to enjoy the new snow before the Tele Cross Event.

Great news - we've had 6 cm of new snow overnight and it's been snowing steadily all morning.

The weather forecast is looking very promising for new snow over the next couple of days (dare we say it..) and this will add to our already excellent coverage over the whole mountain.

Epic Snowfall

WOW - we've had more than 80 cm of fresh snow in the last three of days - check out these pictures. Conditions are epic!

This is a great time to come up for a few days to Broken River. Our on-mountain accommodation is just 10 minutes walk from the ski tow. Check out our 6 night/7 day package where you pay for only 5 nights accommodation and 5 days lift passes.

We were closed today but our guests kept themselves busy in the snow down around the acommodation lodges.

The powder-hungry adults made the most of the fresh light powder on the slopes around the lodges.

It is "Scone Grabbers" Week, our week for families with younger children. Everyone has been having a blast. The kids have spent much of the day sliding down slopes and getting the full snow experience. Definitely powder hounds in the making.

Stunning conditions

After last weeks epic snowfall the skiing and boarding have been truly amazing.

BWM Snow Rider X Rescheduled

Planning is well-underway for the 2011 BWM Snow Rider X but due to unforeseen circumstances this has been tentatively rescheduled for Sunday September 4th.

Our groomer has decided who is boss around the slopes! We're hoping the mechanical failure will be fixed today.

If the problem is greater than we think the event may be rescheduled for the weekend of September 10th and 11th. We'll keep you posted right here!

Our Spring Schedule

We still have lots of snow - in fact we've had more falls in the last 10 days than we've had all season so we're planning to stay open until Labour weekend (23-25th October) weather/snow and patronage permitting.

The Spring Plan

We hope to be open for week days and weekends until October 14th and then weekends thereafter, subject to bookings and weather/snow conditions.

Here's the plan - ski or board by day and relax in the lodges by night! You can also watch the Rugby World Cup matches on our widescreen TV.

The Weeks

From now until October 14th (end of the first week of the school hols) the ski area will be open and on-mountain accommodation will be available.

However, we can only open during the weeks of October 3-7 and Octover 10-14th if we get enough patronage. Bookings for those two weeks must be made by September 30th.

First week of the October School Holidays (October 10-14th)

We will need at least 15 people booked in the Catered or Backpacker acommodation options (or a mixture of both) for the week to proceed. Bookings for this week must be made by September 30th.

Don't worry if the snow goes and we can't run the week you will be reimbursed. See more information about our cancellation policy below.

Discounted Spring rates

Week night pricing in our Catered accommodation will be $45 per night when you book a package of at least 1 night and 2 days.

Spring Cancellation Policy

Great Dux Brewing Co BBQ Bake Off

A sumptuous array of BBQ dishes were cooked as part of the 2011 Dux Bewing Co BBQ Bake Off held at Broken River on Sunday 25th September.

The BBQ area on Palmer Lodge deck was centre-stage for this annual event. Contestants had 15 minutes to produce a tasty BBQ dish using 5 ingredients or less. Dishes were judged on taste, presentation and creativity. The less-than spring-conditions (namely falling snow) did not deter the BBQ chefs from producing some mouth-watering and creative dishes for this years event.

Bluebird day for Broken River 60th

Calm, warm and balmy conditions were the “icing on the cake” for the more than 100 Club members that gathered up at Palmer Lodge, in Broken River basin to celebrate 60 years since for the formation of Broken River Ski Club. Saturday February 18^th 2012 turned out to be a perfect summers day for such a special occasion and a real bonus considering there has been so much bad weather this summer.

Guests included: Leith Newell and Mark Lamb - two of the 12 founding Club members, Club President Ian Hunt, 90-year old Betty Womersley - mother of Olympic ski racing representatives Cecilia Jenkins and Chris Womersley, three New Zealand ski racing representatives (Leith Newell, Chris Womersley, Richard Womersley), eight past presidents as well as numerous past Committee members and Broken River staff.

It was relaxed, "family” day, with youngsters running around the alpine tussocks while parents, grandparents and old friends reminisced on the deck of Palmer Lodge nearby.

The welcome by President Ian Hunt was followed by appetisers and a sumptuous lunch of spit roast pork and salads.

The formal part of the day began with founding member, and wife of the first present, Leith Newell giving a brief account of the events that lead up to the formation of Broken River Ski Club, and the development of the ski field in the Broken River basin. Leith described the first full season of skiing in 1953. “Some of us worked to 9pm on Friday nights and then set off from Christchurch or Rangiora, often not getting to the White Star Chalet at tree line until after 1am… In the morning skins were fitted to skis and off we went, often in a foot or so of new powder. Some people walked up to the basin in snow up to their knees and sometimes waists. The ski tow was stopped for lunch and we sat on a tarpaulin as there was no lunch hut yet”. Mrs. Newell said it has been 60 years of great skiing, close friendships and fun. “Back then we never imagined that 60 years on we would have a passenger rail transporting people up the mountain, the facilities running on electricity, three accommodation huts, five ski tows and see our grand children skiing.”

Long-time members Sally Dickson, Dave Laing and Dave Rodgers also shared some personal stories of their years as Broken River members. Dave Rogers recalled breaking his leg in the mid 1950’s and the long trip into Christchurch Hospital that followed. The initial pain stablisation period included a temporary rest in Grasshopper Lodge (Broken River’s first day lodge) so the stretcher carriers could have a few more ski runs. Dave described the long carry down the foot track through the bush to the car park in the valley below and then a stop to eat pies along the way. Sally Dickson spoke of coming up to Broken River as a junior and recalled ski weeks in the 1970's where two packing trips were required on a Sunday at the beginning of the week to carry all personal gear and ski week food up the foot track to the accommodation. Dave Laing talked about the fun social times he has had over the years, including being part of the infamous "A Team" in the early 70's.

Everyone talked about the strong sense of “family” that Club members have and the fun had by all. Ian Hunt noted the love of skiing and having fun that continues to create the strong bond between Club members. Representing the younger and newer Club members, second generation member Claire Newell thanked the founding and early members for Club and it's facilities, and for their energy, enthusiasm, and sense of adventure. The formal part of the day finished with Betty Womersley and great granddaughter Lily Womersley (8) cutting the birthday cake.

What a great day. It was a real Club celebration of the finest kind – fantastic weather with plenty of laughter, excellent food, and good times catching up with great friends. Cheers to 60 wonderful years!

Phew...it's been a rough few days with bad weather but we have survived and looking to reopen Wednesday 18th July.

It's been a wild ride, with gale-force, nor-west winds and driving rain for the last three days. 110 millimetres of rain later, the weather has finally cleared and we've reemerged into sunshine. What a relief.

Today the staff tentatively made their way up to the main Broken River basin to assess the damage - not knowing quite what to expect. Sighs of relief all around ..... phew! The basin is looking much better than we'd thought it might. Thankgoodness for that! With a bit of shovelling on the Access Tow tomorrow we are hopeful of opening again Wednesday.

Coverage Still Good

The main Broken River Basin has good snow coverage with great skiing. The snow is smooth and firm on most aspects with sugary surface conditions on slopes near the Main Tow.

The lower part of the Access/Rugby Towline has good snow coverage from top to bottom - thanks to some shovelling by the staff. Snow is a bit patchy on the Access Basin area but as you can see in the photo below there is still enough to ski down to the top of the Stairway To Heaven and the ski shed.

Ski Rogaine July 29th

Fancy a fun "treasure hunt" on skis - come join us for our annual Ski Rogaine event on Sunday 29th July.

What is a Ski Rogaine?

This fun event combines skiing around the mountain, searching for "treasure", strategy, and keeping to time. Some might like to call it orienteering on skis. You're welcome to take part as a team, a family, or on your own.

You will be given a map with controls to visit and you'll have an hour to visit as many of these as possible. You're given a few minutes before the event starts to plot out the most strategic route. Hint: some controls are worth more points than others.

Make sure you are back at the alloted time as you quickly lose points for every minute that you are late.

This event is open to everyone. You don't need to be a gun skier - you just need to be able to use the rope tows and get around on your skis or board. It will be loads of fun for everyone and there are prizes for the winning team and other categories.

Telemark Week 2012

Monday marks the beginning of Telemark Week when freeheelers from around NZ and across the Tasman gather at BR to touch up their technique, ski the slopes together and have a great social time - so do come join us!

We're in for a great week with standard Telemark Week followed by the R & R Freeheel Weekend (August 4-5th). Unfortunately the NZSIA Level 1 Telemark Instructor's Course (August 1-3rd) has been cancelled.

Telemark Week

Dates: Sunday night July 30th - Friday 3rd August

Five days to ski the slopes and hone your telemark skills.

Telemark Lessons

We'll be offering telemark lessons through the week. The aim of the lessons is to provide you with a "toolbox" of techniques to suit a variety of conditions and terrain - and all abilities.

Three lessons are included in the Sunday-to-Saturday 6 night/7 day package Skiweek package.

You may to choose to take advantage of our Early Season Specials and pay for your lessons. Lessons, accommodation and lift passes are all discounted by 40% discount for this week.

Private lessons are also available at a 40% discount.

Can Anyone Attend?

Yes, the Telemark Week is open to anyone, including those who would like to learn to telemark. We recommend that you can use a rope tow already. Ski Touring Race Saturday 18th

In this race you get to show off your fitness, speed and stamina, as well as your touring skills and your ability to keep everything together as you race your competitors downhill.

2012 RiderX & Full Moon Party

The RiderX is back again tomorrow, Saturday 1st Sept - bigger and better than ever on what is forecast to be a fine, sunny day. The Mens & Womens Ski & Snowboard heats and finals will take place throughout the day. This awesome event is as much fun for the spectators as the competitors.

Prizes from Quiksilver, Roxy and Skullcandy. Entry Fee $12.

Dux beer and cider flow on tap at the Happy Hour between 4pm-5pm and then DJ Mike Tee will be playing grooving beats on Palmer Lodge deck while the tows spin under the full moon.

Our storm total snow since Saturday Sept 8th has been 77cm and the past 4 days have been the best days of the season. We've had fresh top-ups every day and winter conditions that dreams are made of.

Conditions are at their best with light dry powder and the riding is likely to be better than any day you've had all season (unless of course you've been up here for the past 4 days). Check out the photos below :)

Night Skiing Tonight

Saturday Oct 6th and it's snowing right now - we're opening for night skiing tonight at 6.30pm.

We've had about 7 cms of fresh light POW since 6.30 am this morning and it's still coming down so we should have some great conditions for night skiing tonight. The Tram will be running from 4pm this afternoon and the Rugby/Access Tow will be rolling from 6.30 pm.

Tomorrow is looking good as well, so come up for the night as well. Catered DBB accommodation $60 per person and self-catered accommodation is $40 pp. Book in by ringing us at 03 318 7270. Dinner be at 5.30pm in Lyndon Lodge.

Night Skiing On Tonight

Update for Saturday 13th October - 11 cm fresh snow at the lodges at 3pm and still snowing so night skiing is on tonight!

Should be an excellent evening for riding the pow under the lights. Skiing is on from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

The Tram will be running from 4:00 - 6:30 pm and then again from 9:30 - 10:30 pm.

Tomorrow is looking good to stay up for the night.

Catered DBB accommodation $60 pp, self-catered $40 pp.

Stunning winter powder October 14th

We'll still buzzing from Sunday October 14th - cold smoke hero snow it was - ALL day long (still plenty of fresh pow lines to be found at 5pm)! WHAT an epic day with 25cms of fresh, light and consistent snow. Definitely one of the best days (if not THE best day) of the season. Thanks everyone!

The lucky ones also sampled the snow on Saturday night with some excellent night skiing.

Open for Labour Weekend

We'll be open for Labour Weekend, with 12 cm of fresh creamy snow to be skied and maybe some more on the way.

Saturday and Sunday night accommodation will be $42 for catered option (dinner, bed and breakfast) and $24 for self-catered. Book at the ticket office on your way up to the mountain.

There is a high chance of night skiing Sat and Sunday nights - check our facebook page and the snow report.

Happy New Year and best wishes for 2013 - it's summer right now with long hot days, though we had snow down to tree line last week!

We'd like to thank you all again for supporting us during the 2012 season. It was a bit of a roller-coaster season - great conditions, then some rain, then snow. The second half of the season was definitely THE half to remember - fresh powder falls every week and some stunning skiing until late October.

The best week of the season had to be September 10-15th with over 80 cm of some of the lightest snow our Northern Hemisphere staff had every skied. Conditions stayed wintery and cold all week for some amazing riding.

The snow kept falling into October. The biggest of these was a dump of 70 cm in the second week of October. We had record crowds with people eager to make up for the lack of powder earlier in the season.

So thanks again and we'll see you again on our snowy slopes come July.

It's been an amazingly warm, dry summer in the mountains and now temperatures are starting to cool as we slide towards winter.

It is hard to believe that opening day for the 2013 winter is only about three months away! The Club Committee has been putting in a lot of time towards the on-going management of our Club and members have been busy getting things in order for the coming winter season.

Our 2013 rates are now published. You will find all the details by clicking on the following: lift, accommodation and packages. Remember you can book online right now. The best deal of course is the 6 night/7 day ski week package. Catered package includes three group lessons, six nights accommodation and lift passes for seven days. While we are enjoying the balmy autumn weather we are looking forward to some epic storm cycles and feeling the board(s) sliding underfoot on the snow.

At it's standard rate this Ski Week Package is good value with heavy discounts on accommodation and lift ticket rates and also includes three complimentary group lessons if you book the Catered option. For the month of April we've made it even better value.

Our Ski Week package gives you a relaxing, stress-free holiday in the snow - there is no driving and you're right on the spot. Your accommodation is 10 minutes walk from the slopes in a stunning location which also puts you (though we're not supposed to mention this) in the best position for those early morning fresh tracks.
